  • What is modernism?                                                                                               Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from wide-scale and far-reaching transformations in Western society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped modernism were the development of modern industrial societiesand the rapid growth of cities, followed then by reactions of horror to World War I. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious belief.


Ans - 1)   " The  Embankmentby  T. E. Hulme

   
 
   In the first poem "  The Embankment " there may be characterstic of universal mutability. In this poem., there is some symbols like Gold heels on the hard pavement and the old star -eaten blanket of the sky. Poem is about the fantasia of fallen gentlemen on a cold butter night. The words like hard pavement and star - blanket shows the very bed condition of life form which poet may be passed. Star is used here in a negative meaning.

    Darkness is itself symbolic. It gives us an image of downfall. This poem shows the reality of our life that goes hand by hand with us. - pride turns to degradation. One day. - Title itself shows it well that songs towards symbol of hardship of life.

       Here in this poem poet showing image of Victorian society. The word ' forsaken ' is metaphor in this poem.


Ans - 4 )   Ezra Pound's  In a station of the metro

     

 Here "Metro " itself is a symbol modernism and the crowd represent the people. Then poet .says that in crowd faces are lifeless like dead. Poet gives metaphor of petals on wet black bought. 

Ans  - 5)   " The pool "  By  H. D.       


              
" The pool "  suggests lifelessness. The pool is a modern concept even to take it as little of the poem gives the modern touch to the poem. Even poet has used other metaphor like net, banded one, sea -fish etc. .. 

Ans -  6)  " Insouciance " By  Richard Aldington                                  
In this poem, poet compares his poems with love. The symbol in the poem are :-  Dreary Trenches, Truding Cheerily,  Flock - ( winged).  Poet has used such metaphors like dreary trenches,  truding cheerily, little poem, flock of doves. etc.... .                                                                                                       Ans  - 7)    "Morning at the window " By     T. S. Eliot.      

       The title of the poem " Morning at the window " is completely paradoxical to the them of the poem. Title suggests that theme may be joyful and hopeful. But thecentral idea is completely contrasting. 

The  main idea of the poem is poverty. It present the picture of poor people. Who have to face several hardship form morning to the late night. The wind which gives pleasure is presented as an aimless simple of emotionless people .


In the description of the poem poet used new symbols like plates and all those things and itself suggest their way of living life and they are not connected with natural environment. So their life becomes aimless and they are doing worthless things during their life. 


Ans. -  8)    "  The Red wheelbarrow " By William Carlos Williams



"  The Red wheelbarrow " sings song of craftsmanship.There is many dual symbol like red -white and rain -water and wheel -barrow. As I believe the word " white chicken "suggest a child.


Ans. -  9)   Anecdote of the jar By Wallace Stevens 

This poem all about the jar is centre end speaker present say beauty of her and compared with nature. The title suggest that the poem is about jar poet places the jar at a hill of Tennessee and that kind of story is begun.

But at the end he concludes that nature is always superior than the work of art.


Ans  -  10)   I (a) By  E. E. Cummings 




This poem is full of simplicity and structure of the poem can capture the eyes of the reader. A falling leaf is symbol of loneliness. The one line suggest many things at a time - like fall, loneliness and a last leaf also.last leaf symbolize the inevitable death.
